Steinbrenner to the Pope: Keep Off the Grass

April 19, 2008 by Jodie Lynn Boduch

We mentioned the other day how Pope Benedict XVI will be saying Mass (*holds tongue and refrains from making anti-Yankees joke*) at Yankee Stadium tomorrow.\r\n\r\nAnd who else but Hank Steinbrenner would make sure to tell him to keep off the grass? Not just His Holiness. Everyone else, too, has to steer clear of the sacred ground where Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon retrieve fly balls.\r\n\r\nDevoted reader Caesar was good enough to share a philosophical post inspired by the no-grass stipulation that poses the question, Which Steinbrenner is More Outrageous? (A case can be made for both, but we think George\’s offspring might have the edge).\r\n\r\nWhile we\’re in the mood to pick on Hank, here\’s a little something-something Red Sox Nation (31s) airs during Sox games in response to Steinbrenner\’s dismissive remarks about the team\’s fandom last month:\r\n\r\n

The Yankees have an A-Rod AND now they have an A-Hole (i.e., Hank Steinbrenner). I think that the Yankees should have asked for a Papal blessing (they’re going to need it) instead of telling the Pope to “keep off the grass”.

  2. Jodie says:

You said it. They need all the divine intervention they can get.

Maybe this will persuade the Pope to come to Fenway Park next time instead.

  3. the baker says:

hahaha. I like both opinions about asking for a Papal blessing and going to another location instead. I think the Pope should visit Beaumont, Tx next time he’s in…only cuz I can’t afford to fly all over the States when he visit’s us. But, anyhow….

  4. Jodie says:

If Steinbrenner scared him enough, the Pope might very well opt for the Lone Star state next time around. (And then he can swing by Fenway Park in Boston on the way back to Rome).
