Stock Market Searches Are High When Markets Are Closed

On today’s Google Trends list, the top three most commonly searched terms were: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Willis McGahee injury report and Erik Chopin. How’s that for a mixed bag?
The first term is indeed search-worthy. I can’t describe Dr. King’s life as anything other than the epitome of self-sacrifice for the greater good. Stock markets were closed in the U.S. today to observe the holiday in honor of Dr. King’s birthday.
I check Google Trends regularly to see what companies or stocks people are searching for. Many times the list is dominated with terms like Megan Fox, 24 episodes, products that are highlighted on The View, and Oprah Winfrey’s favorite person, place, or thing of the day (or any topic she spends more than 5 seconds talking about).
Unless there is a scandal, it is pretty rare that I find something like Citigroup stock break into the Top 100. So on today, a day which U.S. markets were closed, I was surprised to find two items on the trends list which referenced the stock market: stock market holidays 2009 and is the stock market open today.
Too bad the stock market interest occurred on a day when the market was closed and searchers were primarily concerned with learning which other dates it will be closed!
Here is a list of stock market holidays:
New Year’s Day (1/1/09), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (1/19/2009), President’s Day (2/16/2009), Good Friday (4/10/2009), Memorial Day (5/25/2009), Independence Day (7/3/2009), Labor Day (9/7/2009), Thanksgiving (11/26/2009), and Christmas (12/25/2009).
BTW, markets close at 1:00 PM the day after Thanksgiving.
Before I close, I must send a get well shout-out to the Willis McGahee. I remember watching the game in which he suffered what could have been a career ending injury in college (Miami vs. Ohio State). Even injured, he was a first round NFL draft pick. He has bounced back before and I am sure he will do it again. And kudos to my fellow UD alum, Joe Flacco!
I am from Maryland and I am not a Ravens fan, but I can appreciate a good player on any team.

Yea, I believe it. But, did you see the markets today? They were, well, down. lol. It was bad. I think Bloomberg mentioned that it was the worst day in the history of inauguration days (for stocks).
Thanks for the comment Aleksandar. You are right, today was well, down! I think we are nearing the bottom and it is no surprise that the financials are leading us there!
