Strange Bedfellows And White Spaces

Do you ever have the feeling that every country outside the USA gets ignored in debates like these?

So, there’s a White Space debate that has been going on for a short time…

“Technology companies are putting pressure on the Federal Communications Commission to open up unused wireless spectrum between TV channels for use with unlicensed devices, but the TV broadcasters say there are still too many interference issues.

Most broadcast channels are separated by small swaths of spectrum, or unused channels called white space, which limit interference from other stations. Technology companies and consumer advocates believe the use of this unlicensed spectrum could open up a wireless broadband pipe into the home, providing a competitor to cable and DSL services.”

And;

Google wants to fill in the TV white spaces

“Google is planning a conference call with journalists on Monday (today) to discuss a company filing with the FCC regarding the use of unused portions of the TV spectrum band, known as white spaces.”

Google is not alone but they are “partnered” with what feels like very strange bedfellows…

The Wireless Innovation Alliance

“The Wireless Innovation Alliance, a coalition of creators, developers, and leaders in technology, is working with policymakers to write those rules and realize the potential of TV white spaces for us all.”

Including: Microsoft, Dell, HP, Intel, Philips, Earthlink, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics.
