Olympic Judo

Judo, a traditional Japanese art of self defense, has been a part of the Olympics since 1964 (with the exception of the 1968 games). Both men and women compete in individual matches in seven weight classes. The competitions are single elimination and two bronze medals are awarded in each class. Scoring and moves are outlined in the above chart.

Japanese athletes have won more medals in Judo than any other country by far (58 medals). French athletes are second with 33 total medals. US athletes have won nine and Canadian athletes have won four.

The Judo competition in Beijing will be held in the gymnasium at the University of Science and Technology Beijing from August 9 to 15.
