Taking Chances
It’s my birthday tomorrow, another anniversary in life. My formative years, at school and college, were before the web existed. The internet was there but I had no connection; my first computer was a Spectrum, which eventually fell apart, I missed ‘computing’ as a topic at school and the college got PCs for use in my final year.
So what am I doing working and writing about digital marketing? I’m a digital immigrant at best; if I took the example of most of contempories from school and college few of them have an online presence. So how come I ended up in this professions? I took some chances. I decided to leave Diageo because I was not gettting out of it what I wanted, took a chance on a role in New York that was very different and am now back in London trying to make my way on an area which is very different from where I started.
The great think about digital marketing is that you too can take chances. There are opportunities to try things out, to experiment without breaking the bank. Take the cost of one ad and use it to try a blog, a Twitter feed, pay for a person to talk to your fans on blogs and message boards. Try something like Will it Blend or experiment like Penguin. Bit don’t just treat it as another broadcast channel to replay your TV ad. Play around a little. Take a chance!
