Happy Friday, Pimp Your Work readers! Here’s our discussion for the week:

What are your thoughts on telecommuting?  Do you telecommute?  If not, do you want to?  Is telecommuting going to be harmful to one’s career, since he/she isn’t visible in the office?  What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting?

  1. I would so love to telecommute more for my day-job. Because I, as a creative type, can just think so much better when I don’t have all the office buzz around me or people walking up to me to ask me a question—I prefer communication by email or IM.

There would be far fewer distractions at home, a much more comfortable environment (no fluorescent lights and I can dress casual), and I can listen to podcasts or music without annoying head/earphones.

The disadvantages would be maintaining the discipline to do what I should be doing and when I should be doing it, it turns the home into a workplace (a dedicated room would help for this), and I think there would be a strong temptation to snack all day long and thus grow fat.

Great points D.Joseph :) I agree that a dedicated working room would help – I became much more productive when I converted one of my rooms into an office, as opposed to a small corner in my bedroom.
