Term “Casual” Too Broad, Says PopCap Exec

Vice president of videogame platforms at PopCap Games, Greg Canessa, finds that the term “casual” can have too many meanings, according to an interview with Edge-Online. Escapist Magazine reported that the exec said that “casual” may refer to a genre, a style of gameplay or a gamer’s attitude toward a particular game. It might have been appropriate in the past, before casual games became mainstream and prior to the “Bejeweled” phenomenon, he expressed.

The former general manager of Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade also posed a question as to what to call gamers who plays a puzzle title but delves into it 100 hours a week. (oh, that’s how often I play Scrabulous, ahahaha)

If you ask me, I get his point. That’s why there are those who we call hardcore casual gamers. (like me!!)

He also mentioned whether he likes it or not, PopCap will continue to use the term since its a “known term”. We would have preferred it if someone or somebody would baptize the genre with a more descriptive name.
