The 2008 BCS Championship Game

Congratulations to the Florida Gators, who beat Oklahoma 24-14 in the 2008 BCS Championship Game.

Now, that doesn’t mean they are actually the 2008 Champions. Florida is a great team, but they aren’t the only ones who deserved to play in the title game. Let’s not get into the whole BCS debate right now though. Let’s talk about the game.

The real difference in this game, in my opinion was Percy Harvin. There was some speculation that this offensive star wouldn’t be able to play during the entire game due to a lingering injury, but he worked through it and really stood out.

Of course, it didn’t hurt that the golden boy Tim Tebow had a great night. Or, maybe I should say, a “better” night. It just wasn’t in the stars for Sam Bradford, who has played much better all year. Now that Florida won this game, I know there will be a lot of talk talk that Tebow deserved the Heisman over Bradford, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. I will say that he had some beautiful passes, like that jump pass for a touchdown near the end of the game. When you get past the John 3:16 eye black controversy and Tim Tebow girlfriend craze, he really is a great college player.

In general, though, the Championship game may have been evenly matched, but it was a shit show. Both teams had crazy turnovers (like the interception by Ahmad Black above), and silly penalties and personal fouls. Worst yet, the teams didn’t really take advantage of the calls that did go their way, and for two teams that supposedly have great offenses, they certainly relied on their defenses a lot.

So, overall, underwhelming. That’s what I’d say about the game. If you want to read more, you can do so at these sources:
