The 2014 Olympics Host City Bid Logo

Last month, I published a post about the disappointing and bizarre logo unvelied for the 2012 Olympic Games.  Now, the 2014 Olympics city has been named as Sochi, Russia and the Winter Olympics committee will commission a new logo.  In the meantime, the bid logo is being used and already, it’s so much better than the final $800,000 2012 Olympics logo.  Let’s hope the commissioned version doesn’t veer too far from the original Sochi aesthetic.  Perez-fox.com has all the details about the bid logo and the competition it had from other applicant cities.

What do you think?  Frankly, I think this logo symbolizes the exact opposite of the 2012 Olympics logo.  The 2012 logo was modern and difficult to understand.  The 2014 bid logo is traditional and simple.  It uses the colors from the Russian flag, clear symbols and bold type.  It enhances the image of the Olympics brand rather than detracting from it.  I’m not sure if there is any symbolic meaning behind the star.  If not, I think I would have preferred a simple snowflake rather than a star that is enhanced to resemble a snowflake.  If you know the symbolism of the star, please post it in a comment.

What do you think?  Should the Olympics Committee invest another $800,000 on a commissioned logo for the 2014 Olympics or should they just stick with the bid logo and use that money for something else?  I vote for the former.
