The 6 P’s for Business Success

(www.bizchicksrule.com) — If you ask 100 people what it takes to be successful in business, chances are you’ll get 100 different answers. Some will tell you it takes hard work, being in the right place at the right time, or knowing the right people. Others attribute success purely to luck, or simply having the best new idea.

While those things may play a small role in the success of a few, it’s like rolling the dice if you count on them to bring success into your life. To succeed in business, you can’t just hope success will come to you: it must be actively pursued. And that’s the first of the six P’s for business success.

Pursuit

The definition of pursuit is the effort to secure or attain, a quest, to strive for or to chase. To be successful in business means you’ve pursued it harder, or longer, or better than the others. Successful business people constantly strive to increase their knowledge. They don’t sit and hope for the right opportunities to come along, they seek them out and chase after them, not stopping until they reach them. If you want to achieve success, you must be willing to pursue it.

Passion

Real success is never without passion. To be successful, at whatever endeavor you undertake, you must be passionate about it. Talk to people who have accomplished success in any field. You’ll hear passion in their voice; you’ll see it in their eyes and in their mannerisms. This passion can’t be taught, or bought or borrowed. It comes from the heart and soul of the person, bubbling up till it spills over and splashes on everyone around them. It’s contagious, and when you’re truly passionate about your business, you pass feeling that on to others. You have a burning desire to see things done and the fire to ignite those around you. If you want to achieve success, you must be passionate about it.

Perseverance

One of the keys to becoming successful in business is perseverance, steady and continuous persistence. The people who become a success are the ones who never give up. They may fail repeatedly, but they just don’t quit. Thomas Edison tested 3000 filaments before he found the one that lit the incandescent bulb. He’s quoted as saying, "If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward." He was totally deaf in one ear and suffered an 80% hearing loss in the other, but he never gave up, and at the age of 84 patented his 1,093rd invention.

Perseverance is continuing to follow the path you’re passionate about, the one you believe will lead you to success. Despite setbacks, disappointments and the advice of non-believers who would tell you to quit, if you’re to achieve success, you must have perseverance.

Patience

In today’s world of instant gratification, patience is in short supply. But it’s a necessary characteristic if you plan to be successful in business. Everything doesn’t happen as quickly as you’d like, but patience allows you to wait for results. Too many budding entrepreneurs give up before they’ve given their ideas a chance to flourish and produce results. If farmers gave up on their crops as quickly as some people give up
on their business ideas, we’d all go hungry. Give your efforts time to develop. Plant the seeds, nurture them, and wait for them to blossom. To achieve success, you must be patient.

Perspiration

Hard work is what keeps many people from becoming the success they’re capable of being. Some have forgotten the old adage, "Anything worth having is worth working for." They want things handed to them, systems already set up and in place, ready to go at the push of a button. With few exceptions, no one achieved great success in business without working hard for it. To be among those who succeeded, you need to be willing to work up some perspiration.

Positive Attitude

A positive attitude will carry you through any bumps you encounter on the road to success. It helps you believe anything is possible. It reinforces strengths and sees weaknesses as areas for improvement. A positive attitude allows you to see the good in bad people, and to recognize a problem as merely a challenge. It supports your belief that anything is possible. A positive attitude draws people towards you; everyone enjoys being around someone with an uplifting spirit. To be successful in life as well as business, you need to develop a positive attitude.

  1. Catchy title and some sound pointers to ensure business success. I might add Priorities to this handy list. When we know what’s important and requiring our attention the most , we put a lot of energy into making it happen. Sometimes I know I diversify a little too much but when I prioritize I see definite results with my ESL business.
I wonder if other readers have any other suggestions for P!
    Thanks for your article Marcia!

  2. These P’s truly are vital to Business Success. Many days I wish I had more of one or the other. Now we know what we need, what is the secret to developing these traits, encouraging them, growing them?

I’ve found one other vital element in Success is COURAGE. I know, it doesn’t start with a P but when I allow fear to intercept any of these 6 P’s (and the 7th Deborah added) everything falls apart.
