The Beijing Olympic Games by the Numbers

The Games of the XXIX Olympiad have officially ended in Beijing. Those of us in North America will see all of the closing festivities and the hand-over to the London Olympic Committee this evening. To sum up the Games, below are a few facts about the Beijing Olympics:

• A record 204 National Olympic committees (countries) participating in the Games.
• 87 different countries had Medal winners
• About 45 percent of the athletes were women, a record number
• The athletes of the XXIX Olympiad set more than 40 world records and more than 120 Olympic records.
• The Games were broadcast to more people in more places than ever before.
• The Beijing Games are the first Olympic event to have global digital coverage.
