The Evils of Gaming

ZumayaVideo games have been blamed for a lot of things; school shootings, criminal activity, domestic violence…they’d have us believe that games are, by weight of evidence, a precipitator of all the ills of mankind. I’m beginning to think that there’s something to this actually, as detrimental effects are starting to show their face amongst the most cherished of professional institutions: Major League Baseball.

Joel Zumaya, a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, is, at 22 years, in the prime of his gaming life. No surprise then that he is a huge fan of Guitar Hero, no doubt impressing his older, less limber teammates with feats of strumming acrobatics. So much so in fact, that he was forced to miss three post-season games due to a repetitive strain injury that team doctors have pinned on his extensive Guitar Hero rockin’. Although Detroit breezed through the American League Championship Series in a clean sweep despite their reliever’s three game absence, you have to wonder just what the Tigers could have done against the Cardinals in the World Series if Zumaya’s shoulder, supposedly up to snuff for game 3, wasn’t suffering from gameritits.
