The Five Worst BCS Teams of 2007

Some schools, like Ohio State, had great 2007 seasons. Others…well…they’re looking forward to 2008 and hoping that fans everywhere forget 2007. And really, it takes more than a bad record to make a bad team – everyone has rebuilding years. In my opinion, here are the ten worst teams of 2007, in no particular order:

1. Notre Dame. It wasn’t just the fact that they led the BCS in sacks allowed (a whooping 58) or averaged a pathetic three and a half yards per game. The really sad story here was that fans were expecting that they’d be good. Ok, maybe not good, but at least not terrible. The good news here is that QB Jimmy Clausen has had a lot of time to practice. Here’s hoping that he’ll come back in 2008 and shine.

2. Minnesota. Like all other Big Ten fans, I’m a little embarrassed that Minnesota is in our conference. They didn’t win a single game all season in-conference, and they only won ONE game total – and it was a 6-7 win over Miami (OH), so you can’t really call that a victory. And last year, they played in a bowl! I mean, what happened? I understand that you have years that you lose seniors more readily, but you always have to plan for the future. They weren’t prepared for 2007.

3. Duke. I don’t know what to say about Duke. I get it, your basketball program is phenomenal. That doesn’t mean that your football program has to suck! Your record over the last decade is 18 – 95. EIGHTEEN??? IN A DECADE???

4. Florida State. The Seminoles didn’t suck in 2007. In fact, they played in the Music City Bowl against Kentucky. Why am I including them on this list then? Easy…a crazy THIRTY SIX of their players, including many first-string athletes, didn’t get to participate in the game because they were involved in a huge academic cheating scandal.

5. Baylor. Baylor is to the Big 12 what Minnesota is to the Big Ten. The difference? Baylor is ALWAYS bad! This year, they really out-stunk themselves, though, leading the BCS with 37 turnovers. Cripes. As a comparison, Duke only had 10 turnovers and Notre Dame only had 9.

Food for thought: ESPN ranked the worst teams of the last decade, and they were, in order from worst to…less worst:

  1. Buffalo
  2. Temple
  3. Florida International
  4. Eastern Michigna
  5. Duke
  6. Utah State
  7. Louisiana-Monroe
  8. Louisiana-Lafayette
  9. Army
  10. New Mexico State

Do you agree with my list of the worst teams of 2007? Do you think there’s any hope for these teams in 2008?

You can’t really put Duke in there as you can’t expect them to EVER win.

Throw in Iowa from last year, a real disappointment…or how about Nebraska, they were a joke.
