The NFL Draft Will Be Slightly Shorter, Still as Awesome

kiper.jpgIn news that only affects Mel Kiper Jr. and the Minnesota Vikings, the NFL has announced that it will cut first round pick time from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. The second round will be shortened from three minutes, from 10 to 7. The remaining rounds will stay at their current length.

“We believe this will make for a more streamlined and efficient draft,” commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement issued during the league owners meetings.

This really means nothing whatsoever. The NFL draft itself is still essentially unwatchable of itself. And I love the NFL draft, but I just think that it’s one of those things that never lives up to the hoopla surrounding it. This is fine, because the NFL draft is all about the hoopla surrounding it. There’s weeks of discussion before and there’s Jets fans booing after; the picks themselves are really not that important. Sure, it’s fun to see that Matt Millen has taken another wide receiver, but it’s just as fun to hear about it. The amount of flabbergast remains the same. I mean, the NFL draft is really just a white guy reading people’s names aloud for hours on end. So what if he does it at 10 minute intervals or 15 minute intervals. There’s still plenty of time to make wild predictions and remind everyone that Tom Brady was taken in the sixth round.

(Internet note: I am still currently enraged at Comcast. That is all.)
