More Rogers Skullduggery: I just spoke to a Rogers rep about the new $30/6GB data plan -- not only is it time-limited, but they won't sell it to people who have any other device, such as a Blackberry, even with a new device or plan! How's that for fair and equitable? I signed up last week for a new blackberry plan, and am paying $30 for a measly 300MB of data...

Rogers, to a degree, caved this morning...

Rogers has introduced a “promotional” 6GB for $30 data plan, which will only be available until Aug 31.

But, what they're not doing, is offering any kind of olive branch to those that have had their contracts for under a year. If you aren't eligible for a hardware upgrade, your only avenue to obtain an iPhone is through cancellation... A hefty $400-500... And no guarantee that you'll keep your #.

Yikes. I have some thinking to do. But, without a guarantee that I'll keep my number, I'm not sure I'll go this route. *sigh*

...Another frustrated Rogers customer.

A blackberry with the same options, except for only 1 gig of data per month and no visual voice mail..... only 15 dollars cheaper. Stop whining please, if you can't afford it.. don't get one I guess it's hard for a lot of people not to follow the trends tho.

the customer that wants this device wants to fully appreciate all that iPhone 3G has to offer so there’s a wide selection of high value price packages to meet the needs of Canadians. We believe that unlimited plans could end up costing customers more for what they don’t use.

Corporate-speak to the f&*%$ing max ...

I'm of two minds:

I NEED data for my work and I've been waiting for the iPhone for over a year. The iPhone 3G is going to allow me to untether myself from the laptop in my house. My current mobile bill is ridiculous (BB 8700r) so I'll actually be saving money by moving to a 3G iPhone with the current Rogers rates.

On the other hand, I still the think that Rogers pricing is ridiculous when compared to AT&T or O2.

I don't doubt that Rogers lacks the economy of scale found in the US and UK markets, but I can't believe that it justifies the current rates that Rogers is charging.

I've been running a hacked iPhone on Rogers in Canada since last year. I have been paying for the $65/month data plan for 1GB of bandwidth. This $65 is in addition to my voice plan and value packs.

I am not a power user while I am "mobile". I check e-mail when I'm on the road and take advantage of google maps. Maybe watch 1 or 2 youtube videos per month if that (it's slow on edge). Over the last 4-5 months I average 40-50 MB in bandwidth (Rogers gives a detailed usage on the bill).

For data, I mostly use the iPhone at home and at the office ... both of which have Wifi that the iPhone uses. So, no data charges at home and work.

It will be nice to bring my plan down in price. So, I agree that I have been paying way too much for my needs. This will allow me to cut my data fees in half and still never use my limit (hopefully).

The hacked iPhone has been working great in Canada on Rogers. The only major issue is not having visual voicemail which will be nice to have. Otherwise, the voicemail indicator is always on even if I check all of the voicemail messages.

It is also my guess that in a year's time Rogers will offer an unlimited data plan as they have for other "select" phones which will force everybody to re-sign a 3-year contract to get the deal.

Thanks for keeping us posted, Tris. They fail to understand that not everyone is going to buy the unlimited data plan, just those who are interested in that much use. I would really like an iPhone (or a Blackberry Bold or a Palm Centro) but can't stomach the prices Rogers is demanding. They would gain more customers with more reasonable pricing.
