The Outlet Wall

Photographer David Friedman has unveiled an interesting concept, which he calls “The Outlet Wall.” He says it would eliminate the need for hiding plugs or power strips. Think of it as functional wallpaper that can power… well, pretty much everything in your house.

Based on the responses Friedman’s gotten on his blog, most everyone seems to think this is a good idea with an attractive presentation. But I’m not sold on it.

Aside from the aesthetic of it (which I think is kinda ugly), 2 things occur to me: 1) The cost of having so many live electrical outlets — even if not every single one of them is live — would be exorbitant. And 2) it would be a parent’s nightmare! It’s hard enough keeping small kids from playing with electrical outlets as it is. How would you keep the youngsters away from an entire wall? Can you imagine trying to buy enough plastic plug-ins to safely cover an entire wall of outlets?

What do you think? Good idea? Or insanity?
