The Perfect Weight Room

I’ve lifted weights in a ton of rooms from my garage to a 5 star hotel in Hawaii. If I had to set up the perfect weight lifting center (for me), here is the ideal place:

First, I would have the temperature around 82-85 degrees. Air conditioning is one of the things I hate most about my current gym. It’s really a rehab center for a city hospital mixed in with a gym to make money. Because most of the clients are old, they keep the temperature very cool and I get cooled off immediately if I I’m not continually moving. Even sometimes if I am, I’ll get that cold sweat. I hate it. I want my muscles warm and I want to sweat when I’m working out. Air conditioning is for sitting on the couch.

Second, my weight lifting room should be spacious. It sucks when you’re constantly trying to cram into small spaces because there is a machine every where you step. Give me a huge room with lots of space between machines so I can feel free and unrestricted.

Of course a gauntlet of weight lifting equipment is a must. The most important piece of equipment is a dumbell rack. After that, everything else is a bonus but it sure can make life easier to have machines, benches, racks, cables, platforms, barbells and everything else.

Finally, I would include mirror walls, lots of light, and a rubber tile floor. Mirrors are very important so you can check your form and indulge your vanity or see how far you need to go. Light is also a big deal to me. I hate lifting in dark or dim settings (like my current gym). Finally, the rubber tile floor is not only easy on the knees (for jumping, lunges, etc.) but also doesn’t chip the weights.
