The Problem with May Recruiting

Recently, I talked about how coaches are using webcams to recruit since they aren’t yet allowed to visit high school campuses. While I think that recruiting is a vital part of any successful college football program, I do have a bit of a problem with high school players being recruited in the spring.
Here’s my issue – have you ever been a high school junior? Yes, you probably have…do you remember that time of your life? It is super stressful. During May, you’re worried about becoming a senior and all that entails. You have to get good grades. You have to pick a college. You have to deal with your friends and if you’re lucky you have a significant other to worry about as well.
Looking back on that time, high school really was fun and not so tough…but as a 17-year-old in that situation, it can feel like things are falling apart at the seams. Worst of all…you’re 17 years old. You just want to chill out.
May is also finals season for juniors. Yes, I know, if you’re being heavily recruited for football, you probably don’t need to worry about grades so much to get into a good college. On principle, however, the grades are important and you never know – you might get hurt and be unable to play in college.
Really, I think recruiters need to take a break. Enough is enough – from mid-April to mid-June, students need to be left alone.
