Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock paired up in the romantic comedy, The Proposal, which is being released on DVD and Blu-ray today. I was surprised but I thought these two actually worked reasonably well together.
In the film, Andrew Paxton (Reynolds) is the loyal assistant to Margaret Tate (Bullock), the much-hated editor at a New York publishing house. She’s successful and driven but she’s also ruthless and pushy but Andrew grins and bears it in hopes of moving up in the industry.
Things veer off-track for Margaret, a Canadian, when she’s told that her immigration papers aren’t in order and she is facing deportation. She panics and comes up with an on-the-spot plan to stay in the country – marry Andrew. She blackmails the younger man into going along with it but things get very complicated when they head up to Alaska together for his grandmother’s 90th birthday. His family is shocked to learn that he’s engaged since he hasn’t been dating anyone but when the pair commit to continuing the charade, their true feelings for each other start to emerge.
The storyline doesn’t hold any major surprises and plods along predictably and there are times when Bullock looks way too old for Reynolds but, aside from that, there are some genuinely funny moments delivered by the film’s strong cast.
