The Rumoured PSP Phone: Do You Want One?

Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring, PSP Phone~

There have been rumours and rumblings about a PSP Phone for a little while now. Is it real? If it was real, how hard would you care?

UberGizmo has some could-be sorta-maybe specs for the “PSP Mobile.” Click the jump to take a look and lose yourself in my fascinating speculation.

the PSP Mobile might bring (copypasta’d with thanks to Kombo:

* 4.3″ 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD display at 480 x 272 pixels and 16.77 million colors
* 2 megapixel camera
* Built-in web browser
* Built-in podcasting
* Flight mode
* Bluetooth connectivity
* Memory Stick Micro/microSD memory card slot
* Streaming audio/video
* Video calling
* Speakerphone
* Alarm clock, calculator, calendar, other PIM functions

Wow, this is intimidating. The fanciest feature my phone has is its MIDI “Mr Brightside” ringtone.

Clearly, this is Sony’s foray into iPhone territory. Kids today are all about the rap music and the cell phones that can dance and sing like caged birds.

The existence of these specs aren’t enough to confirm that a mobile PSP is a go, but it gives us something to think about. Does the PSP need more features to boost interest in the portable? Or is it the PSP’s versatility that scared potential users away in the first place? The UMD movie format is floating down river on its burning funeral pyre. I don’t know too many people who use their PSP to browse the ‘net or listen to music. Are they going to want to gab on the phone and organise their lunch dates with the portable?

Battery life should be taken into account, too. The PSP battery doesn’t hold up well under the best of circumstances. Between powering a phone, a gaming system and a million other hoobie-joobies, the PSP phone might not have enough power to fart out a ringtone after it’s been on for a couple of hours.

And let’s face it, Sony just isn’t as cool as Apple. Whatever it puts out likely won’t turn the heads of the iPhone-crazy crowd.

Nothing to do at this point but wait and see, I suppose.

    I don’t want to sound overly hostile, but this sounds like Sony is using the same strategy that hasn’t worked for the PS3 or the original PSP and hoping that the third times the charm. It seems to me (the sort who isn’t into the iPhone) that this is a few too many devices incorporated into one, they should decide on what the thing is before doing anything more.

  2. I can just imagine if it really had the same battery life as the current PSP. A lot of new phones are being called “I-phone killers”, but really….they should realize they just can’t compete with Apple.

  3. Mike says:

    Epic fail. Battery time of this new PSP mobile should probably be around 2 hours, max.

    If this were the case, then what’s the point?

    I hesitate to call anything an iPhone killer. People are still crazy over them and we still haven’t even seen anything close to an iPod killer.

    I can’t imagine a PSP Phone with decent battery life. It’s funny how low battery life has thwarted handhelds from the beginning of time and yet it seems as if developers never learn.
