Monte- thanks for chiming in. Can you provide some sources for the information? We should all be able to research this on our own if we choose to. Maybe a web site or two that you rely on? Thanks.

Anne: lead, cadmium, mercury, cyanide -- and lots of other substances we routinely use in industrial quantities -- remain toxic for LONGER THAN THE AGE OF THE UNIVERSE, far longer than any of the nuclear-waste isotopes.

I'm open to persuasion that nuclear power isn't cost-effective, or that we simply don't trust our species enough to use it without unacceptable danger from weapons use. But the perception that its risks are somehow qualitatively unique -- that they can't be measured and balanced against benefits as we do with many, many other risks of technology -- just isn't supportable.

Anne- good point. The technology and research behind all of this is changing daily. While I certainly don't have all the answers, one of the sources I listen to and read is Dr. Bill Wattenburg. He seems to be a reasonable advocate of nuclear energy and has many links on the subject of waste on his web page at http://www.kgoam810.com/djadditionalinformation.asp?djid=3552. I think what the research and new technology on all energy sources and wastes from them reveals is that many currently deployed technologies are in fact more of a problem than nuclear energy. The larger issue is that we all need to spend some time (me included) studying this issue so we can make reasonable decisions and be an advocate for them. After all, we bloggers are the ones getting the word out; because the "regular" media certainly doesn't take the time to adequately research topics.

I haven't heard that scientists or anyone else for that matter has found a reliable and safe way to dispose of the wastes... which take literally hundreds of thousands of years to decay so there is no radiation danger. Everyone seems to be ignoring that.
