The top three startup news stories of 2007

Although I started blogging for Startup Spark just a few months ago, I’ve been monitoring the news stories about startups and entrepreneurs for some time now. (Thank you Google News Alerts!)

I’d like to share with you a few of the top news stories that got coverage in 2007:

1) Microsoft threatens to sue startups. Back in May, Microsoft announced it would be aggressively controlling its patents with lawsuits, that would mostly pin small companies and startups against the very rich giant. Microsoft executives claim open-source software violates as many as 235 Microsoft patents.

2) Google invest almost $4 million in 23andMe. It doesn’t sound like much on the surface, but the real issue is nepotism. 23andMe’s founder is married to one of Google’s co-founders.

3) Startups booming. Thanks to falling prices, more powerful bandwidth and the ease with which websites can be set up, it is 90% cheaper to set one up now than at the height of the startup boom. This time it is not a bubble waiting to burst.

    To the Evil Empire,

Sue me? sure, there’s only millions of us small businesses that can’t afford to buy expensive bug-ridden software that doesn’t meet our needs from you.

    BRING IT ON!!!
