Things You’ll Miss Out If You Get An iPod Touch

The Apple Phone Show lists several things you’ll miss out on when you get an iPod Touch instead of an iPhone. Let me list it down here and give my 2 cents as well. My comments are in italics.

1. EDGE – Only surfing via WiFi
I’m not sure this is a bad thing really. I’ve gotten so used to surfing via broadband that anything less is just frustrating. EDGE is good if you’re traveling a lot I guess. But WiFi is getting pretty common place that you’ll find one in most places in the city.

2. Camera – no pictures here
Now this is a valid concern. A lot of people like taking pictures with their phone camera. So this is a good point.

3. Microphone – you can’t talk to your Touch
Another valid concern. I’m not sure whether or not the iPod Touch has the hardware for voice input and Apple just disabled it or it’s really not there. That being said, I think that third-party hardware will be out soon for the iPod Touch. Much like the iTalk for previous generation iPods. iPod Touch + iTalk + VoIP App = AWESOME!

4. Speakers – earbuds only
I’m still undecided on this. I like the thought of having external speakers but the again if I’m listening to music I’d listen via my earphones or a portable speaker. The quality of the speakers for the iPhone isn’t as great as the earphones or an external speaker. For speakerphone purposes I guess the iPhones external speaker is ok.

5. Size – the touch is lighter and smaller
I don’t know with you but to me this is a good thing. It still sports the same 3.5 inch screen so the viewing area is still big. This is definitely a plus.

6. Notepad – none.
Errr…. undecided about this one. Nice to have but I don’t think it will be a deal breaker. As of now I’m fine either way.

Granted the iPhone has much to offer but being in a country where its not yet officially supported I’m not sure these reasons are enough for me to risk it.

Thanks for pointing this out Stephen.

    np!

There’s also a couple of things missing from that list, which may be a deal breaker for some people:

    1. Calendar editing (I personally would hate to forego this feature. Adding events/appointments on the fly is valuable to me)
    2. Bluetooth (I can’t seem to think of BT uses for the iPod Touch but 3rd party apps may make this useful in the future)

I’ve seen unboxing photos of the iPod Touch and I have to say, I really like how thin it is. I’m also more drawn towards the black frame as opposed to the silver one on the iPhone. Unfortunately, the iPod Touch’s back case is the same shiny/scratchable as its predecessors.

That being said, it will mean I will have to give up a lot in order to get the iPod Touch’s bigger HD and smaller size, both of which are not really a concern for me. However, if you value these two, then I say go for it!

P.S. Lets cross our fingers for a 3G + 16GB iPhone to be released on 9/18! That way, you won’t need to have such a conundrum.
