Three Lessons Learned from My Personal Trainer

Over the cookie-, fudge-, and Godiva truffle-filled holidays, yours truly toyed with the idea of getting a personal trainer. Our gym was running a special package for four sessions, and the tease began.
Is it worth it? What would a trainer do to make us shake our groove thang? Weren’t we doing just fine in our group fitness classes, where our goal is to do everything better/faster/stronger than everyone else because it’s an outlet for our competitive nature?
Gym rat over here couldn’t resist finding out the answers.
Personal trainer session #1 took place on Tuesday. Here are the three lessons we learned:
1. When you say to the trainer, “It’s OK to kick my a**, I like to be pushed,” they hear something else. Although we can’t be sure, we think it’s along the lines of, “Pretend you have to squeeze 6 weeks of basic training into an hour or else we’ll tell the other trainers. And then they’ll all point at you and laugh.”
2. Personal trainers have a one-word motto: Schadenfreude. (That’s German for ”joy through other people’s misery”).
3. The likelihood that your soreness level will impede your movement remains quite high, even three whole days later. This can be verified when you’re in the grocery store and the geriatric crowd laps you. Twice. It’s also evident when you climb the stairs at a pace best described as “slo-mo instant replay.”
Session #2 is Monday, so we’ll be sure to pass along what else we learn . . . if we can raise our arms high enough to reach the keyboard afterwards . . .
P. S. Want a subscription to ESPN magazine? Vote in the Project Blog poll and leave a comment on Allison’s post explaining your pick (ahem). Too shy to comment? Consider voting in the poll anyway–we don’t want to land in last place two weeks in a row. *insert crocodile tears*
