Time Tracking

March 27, 2006 by Anne Wayman

I don’t know about you, but I tend to be pretty vague about time… oh I’m not late to appointments… that’s not what I mean. I tend to think I have an infinite amount of time to do a writing project. Or I think I can somehow get more writing projects done in a day or a week than is really possible.

A couple of months ago I downloaded a free piece of software called TimeSheets (http://www.timesheetsmts.com/) and started timing my writing. I found some real surprises, both on the positive side and the negative. (The software is a real help when it comes to billing by the hour too.)

Then I started timing other activities that had nothing to do with writing, like getting dressed or doing the dishes. More surprises.

As freelance writers we get to decide how we will spend the 24 hours we’re each allotted in a day – that’s one of the reasons we freelance. I love it and now that I’m getting out of time vagueness, I’m loving it even more.

You may want to read more about me and time tracking.

Write well and often,

We have been tracking time with online software from Pacific Timesheet (http://www.pacifictimesheet.com) for over a year now and highly recommend it. Not only for consulting, but also project management and access control (for some of our warehouses). Their support for entering time via iPhone is especially great!

We evaluated that product but went with Pacific Timesheet instead (http://www.pacifictimesheet.com). We needed payroll (Lawson) and iPhone support, and wanted a web-based software solution. I highly recommend them!
