Tips and Tricks!

You can use WD-40 on any situation that you might come across. Even adventure games! All you have to do is spray a little on your monitor and WHAMO! Problem solved.
Only do this at your own risk. Okay, don’t do it at all. I was just kidding… Geeze.

You know the problem with adventure games? Well, they take far too much thinking for one. And for another, there are always those weird easter egg things that developers think are fun to put into their games… You know, to give the player more stuff to find that’s funny and/or weird. So… that’s why I’m going to write some tips and tricks and then give you some websites where you can go cheat if you get stuck!

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with cheating on an adventure game, believe you me. I’ve probably had some helpful “hints” (read: I cheated) on probably every single adventure game I’ve ever played. Why? Because I’m one of those people who get bored if I can’t figure something out right away. And since I really love my adventure games, I can’t just give the game up. So I use hints.

So, here’s my guide!

  • When you get stuck, click on everything. And then combine everything in your inventory. And then use your new inventory items to click on things on the screen. Basically, you just hunt and hunt until you’ve either solved your problem, or you go crazy.
  • With going with the theme from above, take everything in your inventory and click it upon your character. Sometimes it works! Sometimes you get funny responses! Sometimes you want to kill your character! But, if you’re stuck, you must try anything. Even if you’re lowered to soliciting hookers! Not that that’s ever happened in a game. OR HAS IT??
  • Read the instruction manual that came with the game! I know, it’s weird, right? But sometimes, there are clues in the story of the game that you probably wouldn’t figure out without reading the book. I know, sometimes this part is boring, but it’s necessary
  • If you don’t want to really cheat by looking up hints online, go to the developer’s website and try to find some blogs or some news items or something of the sort. Why? Well, you might get to learn a little more about the developers who created the game. This might give you some insight on the types of puzzles these people have put into the game. And what’s better, maybe it’ll give you some insight on how to solve the problem. It might not happen very often, but I know I’ve stumbled across some developer sites that let me know what they were thinking when they created the evil puzzle that you just can’t get around. Plus it’s fun to learn new things!
  • Now, if you like to play those old school adventure games that are all text based, here is a little bit of a clue for you. Get a piece of paper and a pencil (or pen) and draw a map of your surroundings! That’s right… when you go into a room, read all about what the room has to offer and then draw a box on your piece of paper. Then inside that box, put some key descriptions. This will totally help you from getting lost. Unless you’re really bad at drawing boxes… and then you’re screwed and probably should stick with the graphic adventures. But who can’t draw a box?
  • Lastly… don’t get frustrated. Frustration in an adventure game is never good. It’s suppose to be relaxing. You know what I do? I get up and go to the bathroom. Oh, I know it sounds disgusting, but once you sit on that toilet for a little while, weird things start coming to your brain. Things that you probably would never think about while sitting in front of the computer. Give yourself 5 minutes on the pot and you might be able to solve the riddles to curing cancer, bringing about world peace, or finally putting that last piece of the adventure gaming puzzle together.

Now here are a list of some sites that you can go get some clues from, because who doesn’t need a hint every once in a while?

  • GameBoomers – I absolutely love GameBoomers, as they always have all sorts of adventure game news. What’s more is that they have lots and lots of adventure game walkthroughs! I LOVE IT!
  • Universal Hint System – Oh man, this site is great for hints. Why? Because this system will only show you one hint at a time instead of ruining the entire puzzle for you. It’s good if you’re super stuck, but don’t really want to cheat too much.
  • The C64 Adventure Game Solutions and Walkthru site – This is for you old school gamers who just can’t get enough of the Commodore 64. The Commodore 64 had a TON of games on it, believe it or not. I think my dad had a couple thousand that he “borrowed” from various would-be villians. This site has a TON of hints and solutions you can look through.
  • Game FAQs – This isn’t specific to adventure game only, but I’m sure you can find an adventure game or two to get hints for
  • FISICX – This site is more specific to the adventure game genre. Here you can find walkthroughs for such games as Scratches (I totally cheated on this game), Myst, and Rhem. Go ahead, take a look!
  • World of Monkey Island – This game has anything you’ve ever wanted to know about the Monkey Island series. Plus lots of rumors of things to come for the series… if there are ever more things to come from that series.
  • The Easter Egg Archive – This website has a whole bunch of games and all their different easter eggs that you can find. Oh, mama likes.

So, there you have it, my friends. The Adventuress Guide to Adventure Games. Take this information and cherish it forever, my friends.

Excellent article dear Adventuress, excellent. Oh, and i would also consider scanning the game’s box and website (reviews even) for clues as fair game…

    Anyway. Fantastic write-up!
