Tips For Writing A CV

In the United States we use resumes and cover letters to help a potential employer understand who we are. I was suppose to be traveling to Cameroon for two weeks, leaving this coming Saturday. However the trip was postponed. My plan was to write a series of posts that would focus on employment in International countries. I will remain in the US over the next fewCurriculum Vitae weeks, but I thought I would share this post on Tips for Writing a CV. In Cameroon they use CV’s. But there are professions in the US who also use CV’s such as college professors. CV means Curriculum Vitae or autobiography.

Just like hiring managers use resumes to determine who they will interview, a CV is used the same way. If you want to discuss your qualifications for a position overseas, you will need to develop a CV. It must be well written just like a resume in order to help you successfully unlock doors for interviews.

Tips for Writing a CV:

1. Include a title “Curriculum Vitae and than type your name

2. Your address, contact details should be neatly presented, with date of birth, nationality and marital status also possible here.

3. Write a personal profile that includes 4 or 5 sentences. Include an overview of your knowledge, skills and abilities. Your profile should be interesting and professional.

4. Include a section on the CV titled Work Experience. This section should include your work experience, including the name of the organization, dates of employment, job title. You will also want to include achievements in your specific position, trainings that you have completed can be included here as well.

5. Include an Education section. All degrees and certifications can be included here.

6. Any additional skills such as language, computer programs can be included here.

Do you have a CV? I would love to hear from you if you have a CV. Do you prefer the CV over the traditional resume used here in the US? Do share your thoughts on this subject.

CVs are used often in the scientific research arena. As a public health research professional, I have one which includes sections for my publications, oral presentations, and any training/teach courses which I have conducted, in addition to the categories listed in this article. I find that unless requested, the CV is not something that one would send out initially when applying for a job as it can be quite lengthy (mine is about 8 pages… I know folks with CVs about 25-30 pages). I use a two-page resume in general when applying, and then at the point of an interview, I typically include my CV as part of my dossier.

  2. Hey Jeanetta! Thank you so much for stopping by bizzia Careers today! I appreciate your input on this post with your comment. It helps to hear from someone who does use a CV in the US. I have never used one, thought I believe I will put one together in the next couple of years. Please feel free to stop by anytime and share your expertise!!

    Have a great day!
