Tom Brady and New England will defeat the Lions, uhh, so?

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

(Squibster full disclosure – being a lifetime Lions fan can cause severe brain damage)

Tom has one, Lions want one

Tom BradyThe Patriots will come into Detroit to Ford Field and defeat the Detroit Lions on Sunday. This much you probably already know. The spread is something like 14 points in New England’s favor.

Tom Brady will return to the area where he went to college at UM and learned his craft. Your intrepid author got to witness him play many times in college, especially against my lowly MSU Spartans. He was probably the most accurate college quarterback witnessed by the Squibster. He will get to practice this precision on the Lions. You also probably know this as well.

The part that you do not know is… that Rod Marinelli, the coach of the Lions, is on the right track. This was laid out for you weeks ago in discussing how Marinelli is slowly changing the culture.

Ok, you are right, they appear to not be any better now than they were then, but you have to believe me, they are.

No less a spokesperson than Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts has this to say

Q: Marinelli isn’t evaluating for the future by throwing in youngsters. He’s doing it by putting pressure on the players to win now, even though the playoffs are out of reach. Is that what you did in 1996?

A: “We won the first five the next year, but those five we won at the tail end of ‘96 were a big part of it. You tell the guys, ‘If we do A, B and C, we’re going to win.’ When you don’t win, it’s hard. But then when they see the results, they say, ‘You know what? Coach might be right. If we keep doing this, this is the way to win.’ I think it’s very important.

“I know very well that’s what he’s trying to do. ‘We’re going to continue to do the same things. We’re going to treat every game the same way. We’re going to prepare the same way. And we’re going to win these games.’ That becomes hard to do. To change that mentality, it’s important, though.” source

It won’t be easy. There is still Bill Ford Sr. as the super loser owner and Matt Millen the GM that has not provided much talent for Marinelli to work with. In fact, if you throw in the fact that the Lions have a pretty tough remaining schedule and that Coach Martz may get offered a head coaching job at the end of the season, and it gets pretty darn hard.

Wiggles Greg Page factoid Greg Page, lead singer of the Wiggles, will be leaving the group for medical reasons. All Parents of little kids will understand the seriousness of this message.

It is tough to have optimism when your team is 31st in rushing, 26th in defense, and has lost 3 games in a row, but Marinelli is getting the job done.

What job is Marinelli getting done? He is changing the culture, it’s as simple as that.

Check out the new poll at the right!

The Lions only have a handful of stars to build around for the future. Roy Williams, Kevin Jones, Shaun Rogers, Ernie Sims, Dre Bly, and … how about next years 1st Draft Pick?

NFL Football Fan Question Life as an NFL Coach can be very tough when your team is just not very talented. Can Marinelli survive longer than Millen in Detroit?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
