Tony Dungy’s Pals Say He’ll Coach Again

What is it about NFL coaches that can’t stay away from the game? It’s obviously in their blood. That kind of commitment can be a good thing, but it can also get in the way of health and a personal life. Yesterday I mentioned that Mike Holmgren may be getting the itch to come back, and today I’m talking about Tony Dungy.

Now, Dungy (in my opinion) is a different breed of retirement. He wasn’t burned out or sick. He simply wanted to do something else. He’s very active in youth and ministry, and wants to do something more along that lines.

He also left at the height of his success. It wasn’t like he hadn’t seen a championship in decades. He made sure his team was still relevant.

One source says that a few close friends of Dungy’s believe that he will be back to coaching at some point. One of them, Herman Edwards, is a friend and former assistant. Another, is Lauren Dungy, his wife. Apparently Tony’s wife doesn’t think he’ll miss coaching, exactly, but yet so many coaches come back that she thinks Tony could be one of them.

I think he did some great things and wouldn’t be sad to see him come back if he wanted to. Then again, he’s such a great guy I wouldn’t want to see him burned out, either.

What do you think? Will he be back? Can he do what so many coaches couldn’t? That is, find a life beyond coaching?

  1. Jason Bean says:

Being from Indianapolis, I can tell you that whatever team and city that might get him will be better for the experience. Such an amazing individual, above and beyond what he brings to the team, the field and the locker room.

  2. Thanks for commenting, Jason. It’s rare to have a coach so well liked and respected. Tony is truly a unique individual.
