Top 10 Blogs For Writers – Close But No Cigar

blog.jpgDarn, drat, sniff and a few snivels!

The Golden Pencil did not make Michael Stelzner’s list of Top Ten Blogs For Writers.

Right now I want you to know that I’m feeling everything every rejected writer feels. Hurt. Anger. And not a small amount of frustration because I truly don’t know why my blog made it two years running and failed this year.

Sure I’ve got more competition and some of the newer blogs are darn good. But what am I, or rather what is my blog, chopped liver?

No, it’s not. I get far to much positive feedback to feel worthless or even like I’m not doing a good job. Which doesn’t mean I won’t take a close look at the Top Ten and see if I can figure out what I can do without over working myself.

That’s probably the secret to handling rejection as a freelance writer – constant work to improve.

And if any of you have any suggestions, I’m wide open.

Write well and often,

Two newsletters:
Abundant Freelance Writing – a resource for freelance writers including 3x a week job postings.
Writing With Vision – for those who want to get a book written.

Hi Anne-How does a person break into freelance writing? Do you have any upcoming articles on the subject?
    Thank you!
    Cara

  2. Kelly says:

It’s an outrage! You totally deserved to be on the list! ;)

  3. Lori says:

Well you’re at the top of MY list, Anne! I’m not sure of the selection process, but I suspect it’s pretty arbitrary and based on a few factors – the mood of the judge(s), the number of new applicants, and the desire to mix things up a bit.

You completely deserve to be on the list given all the contributions you’ve made to the freelance writing industry.

  4. Anne Wayman says:

Kelly and Lori, thanks so much… I worked in clay today so I’m feeling totally content… not only that, later today I get to go kayaking!

  5. Hey Anne;

You still have an excellent blog and should not let not being on the top 10 bring you down.

What made this year’s race so challenging was the exceptional number of high quality bloggers that are now dedicated to writing.

It was really a very tight race and a lot of great blogs never made it to the top 10.

The good news is you have made the list twice and for that honor you should hold your chin up :)

    Keep up the good work.

    Mike

  6. John Hewitt says:

I think I already commented on your blog pretty extensively during March Madness. I like it a lot, but I don’t link often because the content isn’t in-depth enough for me to pass on to others.

    Anne,

I was also very surprised not to see The Golden Pencil on the list. As others have already said, you have a great writing blog.

  8. Anne Wayman says:

Mike – you’re a doll… and you’re right, there are a ton of good blogs for writers out there.

John – yes, you’ve been a supporter of mine… can you be more specific about not in-depth enough?

    A

  9. Sorry to hear it Anne – I have to admit I read your blog mostly through my RSS reader, and the job postings are the most useful part to me :)

Keep up the good work, and don’t let it get you down! :)

  10. Err I mean that your blog is valuable overall, and I find the job postings particularly valuable…I had a splitting headache when I wrote the last comment :) Glad you are bouncing back.

  11. Anne Wayman says:

lol, thanks… and when you get a splitting headache, it’s my opinion you should run from the computer screen.

  12. Honestly, the list focuses on business-related blogs more than a full range of writing, so there’s only one on the top ten list that I read regularly. The rest usually deal with areas of the freelance writing world where I either know the information already and use it in my daily life, or are in such corporate-centric areas that they’re not helpful to me. It’s too much work-from-home within the cubicle model rather than the type of freelance life I’ve carved out.

They’re all great blogs, don’t get me wrong, just not geared to my needs. Your blog is much more interesting and relevant to the writing life I’ve carved out.

  13. Anne Wayman says:

Devon, what an interesting view of what I do… and I hadn’t even realized that my blog really is about the freelance writing life / work at home / no cubes here sort of thing isn’t it. Maybe “no cubes here” should be a subhead of mine ;)

    thanks so much
