Forbes.com reported on the topic of how lucrative some sporting brands are and they were able to come up with a list with corresponding monetary value (with consideration on the number of days it runs) as the basis for the ranking.

In the article it stated something about how the Olympics fared on this economic study and its expected performance on the upcoming Games, “In terms of total revenue, next summer’s Olympics will rake in more than any other sporting event, $3 billion. The Beijing games will leverage their global audience with $1.7 billion from broadcasters, a record for the Olympics.”

Check out the full ranking as follows:

#1 NFL Super Bowl (US$ 379 Mil)

#2 Olympic Summer Games (US$ 176 Mil)

#3 FIFA World Cup (US$ 103 Mil)

#4 NASCAR Daytona 500 (US$ 91 Mil)

#5 Rose Bowl (US$ 88 Mil)

#6
NCAA Men’s Final Four (US$ 82 Mil)

#7
Olympic Winter Games (US$ 82 Mil)

#8
Kentucky Derby (US$ 69 Mil)

#9
MLB World Series (US$ 56 Mil)

#10 NBA Finals (US$ 47 Mil)

It’s amazing how sporting events are now seen as a commercial avenue for both organisers and the whole sports industry that’s it’s quite sad, really.

It’s easy to say you can turn down such an amount, eh? But people will always have reasons why it’s good to monetize these events.

$3 billion — is that all, LOL? Seriously, what a staggering number. Pretty hard to say no to that kind of money…

Geoff: Fine. I’ll give them US$3 Billion and a penny, how’s that? Hehe. ;)

All those athletes putting in so much time and effort to train but they see very little of that 3bn. The athletes provide the entertainment; should they not get at least a percentage of that very large chunk of change?

  4. Sasha Manuel says:

I have to agree with you sauerkraut. But you have to admit that there are some athletes who take a piece of that cake home — they become ad endorsers that make tonnes of money. Hehehe.
