Entrepreneur magazine has released its annual list of the top 500 franchises, and 7-11 tops the list for the first time in 2008. That’s a position Subway has held for seven years, but 7-11’s conversion over the past two years from company-owned stores to franchises is being noticed and recognized as a positive transition. This new accolade should translate to positive boost to the 7-11 brand. I’m sure the company will promote their top franchise ranking heavily in 2008.
Interestingly, the top 10 franchises in Entrepreneur’s list of the best franchise opportunities for 2008 look like a who’s who of fast food. Here are the top 10 franchises of 2008 according to Entrepreneur:
- 7-11
- Subway
- Dunkin’ Donuts
- Pizza Hut
- McDonald’s
- Sonic Drive-In
- KFC
- InterContinental Hotels
- Domino’s Pizza
- RE/MAX Intl.
I was actually most surprised by the franchise that came in at #11, The UPS Store/Mail Boxes, Etc. I’m not a franchise expert, but I am familiar with the various lawsuits from franchise owners against UPS for unfair practices. Entrepreneur’s list of the top 500 franchises is created using a “top secret ranking formula,” so it’s difficult to know why one franchise ranks high on their list and another ranks low.
What do you think of Entrepreneur’s list of the top 500 franchises for 2008, and in particular, what do you think of the top 10?

I saw your posting and thought you would be interested in hearing about how my client Wireless Toyz Cellular Superstores has achieved national mega-chain status in what’s been described as “breakneck speed growth.” Wireless Toyz catapulted onto Inc. 500’s 2006 list of fastest growing privately-held U.S. companies and is ranked #1 in category and 98th fastest-growing franchise by Entrepreneur Magazine in the 2008 Franchise 500. All locations have a professional appearance, major regional and national service providers in one location, easy, one-stop shopping experience for consumers, advertising and marketing efforts that set them apart from competitors, certified “Wireless Expertz” with in-depth product and service knowledge, open display cases enabling consumers to compare and contrast products, ongoing product training and promotional and networking events. Franchise agreements are very one sided. The top 5 on your list has one with a severe history of legal battles with their franchisees. I entered and had a store wherein Franchisor abused, demanded purchase of new equipment constantly, had agreements with substandard equipment at top dollar prices. I got the feeling kickbacks were in there somewhere. The franchisor is deceitful as to reasons for store closings. “Remodel” is a word often used when in fact the franchisor has bled the franchisee dry and forced out of business. When one agrees to a francise, they are simply purchasing a JOB and you are at the mercy of the franchisor who employes less than capable persons to control the puppet strings they have attached to the franchisee. I wonder if the TOP CAT ever knows how much he diminished the lives of those who have been dunkin their total wealth and emotional self in their franchise.
