You know what’s good? When big named video game websites decide to create entire articles on those games, which we lovingly call “adventures”. On Tuesday, IGN did one of their Top 10 Tuesday’s on what they called “Greatest Graphic Adventures”. Because, you can’t have adventures without graphics, am I right?

Oh, alright. You don’t have to remind me of all those text-based adventure games. But, graphics are way more exciting than text. That’s why I only read books that have plenty of pictures, as not to get too overwhelmed with all them word things.

According to IGN’s list, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the SCUMM engine, which happens to be the engine our favorite Grumy Gamer, Ron Gilbert, wrote his very own self. The SCUMM engine has been used in many games, which many can be found here on this wikipedia entry. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?

Now, that’s not to say that the following list was all made through the SCUMM engine. In fact, many did not. We are just celebrating the greatness of what SCUMM did to the adventure game genre. Oh yes.

Here is IGN’s top 10 Greatest Graphic Adventures

  • 10. Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
  • 9. Myst
  • 8. Police Quest II: The Vengeance
  • 7. Shadowgate
  • 6. Sam & Max Hit the Road
  • 5. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge
  • 4. King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder
  • 3. Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle
  • 2. The Longest Journey
  • 1. Grim Fandango

Looking at this list, it makes me realize just how much I despise LucasFarts. I mean 40% of these games were created in what I like to call the Renaissance era of LucasArts. Now, they’re in the dark ages, with all those stupid Star Wars games. Oh well. I’ll just look for my games from some other company who can keep my loyalty.

I’d have to say I’d agree with most of the games on this list. There is only one on here I haven’t played, and that’s Shadowgate for the NES. I should see if I can find it and blow the dust off the ol’ NES and have some good times. Oh yeah.

Check out the IGN article to see why they picked the games they did.
