Toshiba announces first iPad challenger

Toshiba has unveiled what may amount to the first challenger to Apple’s long-rumored, upcoming tablet device (nicknamed the “iPad“) — before Apple’s device has even been officially announced. The JournE Touch is Toshiba’s attempt to be the first on the marketplace with a touchscreen tablet.

The JournE Touch is half an inch thick, sporting a 7″ screen, and weighing less than a pound. WiFi is built in of course, and the device runs on an ARM processor and Windows CE 6.0 Pro. It has 1GB of built-in storage, but an SD slot allows you to expand on that, while a USB port lets the device connect to your television, computer, or other household electronics.

Like other planned tablet devices, the JournE Touch is intended primarily as a device to be used for accessing the Internet in a simple, handheld fashion. It uses Internet Explorer to access the Web, has dedicated apps for accessing Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and Picasa, and plays digital video and audio files.

Toshiba plans to release the JournE Touch first in Europe, in time for Christmas of this year. Other regions will get their hands on the device early next year. The suggested retail price is 249 Euro, which translates to about $360.
