Tracking The Money 70: Part 2

Two months ago, I started tracking the Money 70 to keep up with the magazine’s list of “recommended portfolios.” Things weren’t looking too good!
At the time of my last post, there were only four funds with positive returns for the three time periods (one month, one year and three years) tracked by the Money 70. All four funds were bond funds.
The funds are listed below, you can click the tickers to view the chart of each fund versus the S&P 500.
FPA New Income (FPNIX), Vanguard Intermediate Tax-Exempt (VWITX), Vanguard Short-Term Bond (VBISX), and Vanguard Total Market (VBMFX).
The Money 70 list includes funds from eight categories: Large-Cap, Midcap, Multicap, Small-Cap, Specialty, Foreign, Bond and Target-Retirement.
In looking at May’s issue, I wanted to see (1) if the four funds from my last post were still in positive territory and (2) if any other funds made a comeback.
The Vanguard Intermediate Term Tax-Exempt Fund (VWITX) was the only fund to slip into negative territory. The fund recorded a one month loss of 2.1 percent.
The majority (58) of the seventy funds rose during the one-month holding period. One fund, the Vanguard Emerging Markets ETF (VWO), recorded a 7.9 percent return for the one-month period ended 3/18/09. The fund clobbered the S&P 500 by gaining 25 percent in the past three months.
I guess things are looking up! For the complete list, visit Money 70.
