The Tucson Citizen is the latest casualty in the fall of the newspaper industry. This newspaper, which is published Monday through Saturday, has been around since 1870 when it was founded by Richard McCormick.
When the Gannett Company, the owner of the Tucson Citizen, couldn’t find a buyer, the newspaper was forced to stop publication. The final edition of the newspaper was released on Saturday — a 40-page release that celebrated the long history of the Tucson Citizen.
The peak of the newspaper’s popularity was in the 1960s when it had a circulation of approximately 60,000. Today, the newspaper’s circulation was down to less than 18,000.
Tucson has only one newspaper left in publication — the Arizona Daily Star. The Daily Star reportedly has a circulation of more than 115,000.
