Turn Wii Into A Media Center Using Opera & Orb

February 25, 2008 by Patrick Quek

Using freeware Windows application Orb with Nintendo Wii own Opera web browser, we can turn our Wii into a Media Center that streams our digital media content (pictures, audio and video) in our PC or laptop to the Wii for viewing. This is an easy setup to pimp your Wii but video viewing will not be of a high quality as they are streamed and displayed in Flash format. Hit the Wiilink for the full instructions of setting up from LIfehacker.

What I don’t get is why we have to go via a streaming website to get to our PCs? If one has a wireless network, one should be able to connect directly to the pc. Then all that is needed is a good enough browser on the Wii to play mp3’s or flash files. We need only to write Plugins for the browser. Bandwidth is capped in 3rd world countries so it becomes extremely expensive to stream stuff and hence the practicality of setting this up in children’s hospitals or schools etc falls away
