Twitter has quickly become an online phenomenon. Over the last few years, millions upon millions of users have signed up to join this microblogging playground. Although Twitter has a lot of fans, one notable aspect is missing – a business model.

Despite having more than $50 million of venture capitalist money, Twitter isn’t creating any significant income. In fact, Twitter hasn’t even begun to attempt to make an income. So far, virtually everything the site offers is free.

Recently, there was a Twitter premium account hoax that caught the eyes of thousands of Twitter users. On the bbspot.com humor site, a blog post appeared that supposedly showed the long awaited Twitter business model. The hoax indicated that there would be multiple levels of accounts available, ranging in price from $5 to $250 per month.

After hours of panic in the Twitter world, the rumors have finally started to die down. That said, the Twitter world remains obsessed with how Twitter will try to make money. Will they add advertisements? Will they limit the number of “tweets” per day? Will they, as the hoax suggests, create premium accounts?

Whatever the final outcome is, expect the Twitter announcement to be scrutinized extensively whenever it becomes official.
