With Chad Pennington out for the season, the Miami Dolphins quickly made a move to add quarterback depth by trading for Tyler Thipgen. In the deal, the Kansas City Chiefs received an undisclosed selection in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Last season, Pennington and the Dolphins were a great story. After Pennington was released by the New York Jets, he landed with the Dolphins and took them to the playoffs with a record of 11-5. But after another shoulder injury, many team insiders believe that Pennington’s career could be over.
In Week 4, Chad Henne is expected to start at quarterback for Miami. The second round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Henne will likely be given a few weeks to retain the job. If he doesn’t impress, Thigpen could be given a shot.
With the Chiefs in 2008, Thipgen threw for 2,608 yards and had 21 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and two lost fumbles. In the offseason, the Chiefs acquired quarterback Matt Cassel, which made Thigpen a luxury the team no longer needed.
