UAW Membership Drops Below 500,000

Union Leaders Fear Fewer Opportunities for Corruption

The United Auto Workers union membership has fallen below half a million for the first time since World War II.   Union leaders are concerned that a large number of phony jobs would have to go unfilled as dwindling membership could cut the number of legitimate Social Security numbers that could be used to collect additional union dues from employers.

Management officials at the Big 3 auto companies were also said to be worried that shrinking union ranks could mean car production would be increasing just as the economy goes into a recession.

In a rare show of cooperation, management and union officials vowed to work together to help preserve the intricate web of kick-back and double-dealing already in place.
