After spending more than £10,000 on consoles and games for inmates in the government run prisons and detention centers, the Prison Service is now swinging ’round the other way and removing some privileges from its inmates.

Prisoners will now be required to buy their own video game equipment, and be restricted from playing games that are rated 18. Only those with records of good behaviour, and those who are suicidal (?) will be allowed to partake, as the UK’s Prison Reform Trust has declared games to be “no substitute for purposeful activity like work or education classes”, but they also cautioned that they “should not forget the usefulness of these games to prison officers and governors keeping order in overcrowded prisons “.

Who knew that the lowly video game could have such an impact on the orderly, lawful progression of society?
