President Barack Obama has announced that he plans to institute trade penalties to slow the number of tires for cars and light trucks coming from China. While China is angered by the decision, the United Steelworkers are smiling.
Leo W. Gerard, the United Steelworkers International President, says that the President’s decision will help American workers.
Said Gerard: “For far too long, workers across this country have been victimized by bad trade policies and government inaction. Today, President Obama made clear that he will enforce America’s trade laws and stand with American workers.”
The United Steelworkers say that the lax trade laws have allowed the import of tires from China to cause job losses in the thousands. To get the trade penalties imposed, the United Steelworks point to a group effort.
“In the past, the efforts of our opponents often have worked,” said Gerard. “But in the past weeks, dozens of political leaders, more than 60,000 Steelworkers, their families, friends, neighbors and allies across the country said enough is enough.”

How stupid can we be? Let’s start a trade war with the nation that is the largest buyer of our government debt, and the one just months ago we were begging to continue buying our debt. And, oh, by the way, the US tire companies own a large chunk of the low-cost Chinese manufactures. So just who are we punishing?
