Univ. of Virginia bans all signs at sporting events

The University of Virginia has banned all signs at sporting events.

The University of Virginia has banned signs at all sporting events, effective immediately. The ruling comes after a little problem last season at a Cavaliers football game.

A student was almost ejected for bringing a sign that said, “Fire Groh,” in reference to Virginia head football coach Al Groh.

Virginia won’t be the last school to take this step. I’m sure others will follow in their footsteps rather quickly. Since you won’t be seeing any great signs in the stands at Cavaliers’ games, how about a trip down memory lane at some great sports signs.

Here’s a great sign that let everyone know exactly what this hockey official was thinking. After seeing this next picture, I think you will all understand why some signs are left out of the stadium.

Here’s what happens when you sit in the home team’s section and you are rooting for the other team. You have to give it to the Maryland fan for quick thinking and making up the rest of that sign. Here’s a fan that wishes to get back at former West Virginia head football coach Rich Rodriguez.

College GameDay has long been a place where fans bring signs that millions see every Saturday morning. Here’s an image with many various signs, including a Lou Holtz for “prethadent” sign.

This is a complete disgrace to college football, and the administrators at Virginia should be ashamed of themselves. Every sporting event, be it high school, college or professinal, already has a simple and efficient way of keeping offensive signs out, it’s called checking them at the gate. Apparently, this was too complicated for the adminstration at Virginia. So be it, they have ended a tradition as old as football itself. If you don’t believe it, simply go back and check those old clips of the Big Game or the Ice Bowl, and take the time to look into the stands. You’ll see dozens of signs facing back towards you.
