Unlocking German iPhones

MacNotes.de has provided some early coverage regarding the unlocked $1477 (999 Euros) iPhones being sold in Germany. (If you missed out on the original story, a temporary injunction against T-Mobile is what made unlocked iPhones in Germany a reality.)
Along with the special price comes a special process for unlocking the iPhone. The first step is relatively simple: buy your locked (regular) iPhone and pay the premium. From that point your IMEI number is sent to Apple to be recorded as capable of being unlocked in their database. This usually takes about 24 hours. Next, you would connect your iPhone to iTunes to complete the unlocking process which takes “seconds”. After the unlocking, you are free to go about syncing your iPhone with iTunes.
Now, if that wasn’t enough, the iPhone even stays at firmware version 1.1.2 (for your jailbreaking pleasure). However, the process seems to raise some eyebrows as it might allow for unauthorized unlocking to become “readily available”.
On another quick note, iPhones are set to be released in France on November 29th. Under French law, Apple is forced to offer unlocked iPhones after 6 months.
