Valentine’s Day : Genuine vs. Commercial Value

February 14, 2007 by Maricel Ferrer-Custodio

For some businesses Valentine’s day could make or break their sales.  This is very true for those involved in the flower and gifts delivery business.  My friend; who is working for one of the top flower delivery businesses here in Sydney, never fails to recruit for casual workers during this period.  He said that it is the time of the year that dictates, if they will meet their quota or will surpass their target for the year.  There are several special occassions that requires flower deliveries but nothing comes close to the demand during Valentine’s day, as he disclosed.

This made me think if Valentine’s day is a truly special romantic day or just another one of those commercial events giving a boost to the sales of certain businesses.

Then I remembered, maybe my clients are thinking the same.  Is my friendliness and good rapport simply a show to get their business or do I have a genuine concern that I wanted to serve them well?

Personally, I’ve been taught by my parents to always be sincere in everything I do and say, specially when dealing with our clients. People feel if you have a genuine concern for them or you are just there for the money. Our realty business bears our surname on it.  It is one of the factors that made me more careful in serving the needs of our clients. I don’t want to do anything that could tarnish our name. It is our personalized service that differentiated us from hundreds of other realtors in the business. I remember my dad advising me, if you serve one client well and he is happy with your service…he will remember you and recommend you to others. It is the best way of growing your business than doing several half-baked deals and spending money on advertisement to get one shot deals.  Sometimes you get bulk of your business more from repeat clients.

If you have passion in your work, you will aim to be your best…not only in establishing rapport but in being knowledgeable about your work.   It helps you make intelligent decisions, smarter recommendations and sound deals for your clients.  Afterall, if your client was successful in his real estate purchase then he has more money to invest again.

This model worked well for our business.  We enjoyed our work, most of our clients became our friends and our network grew bigger over time.  We were able to establish a level of trust among our clients, that they remember to call us for their real estate needs, without us reminding that we are here to do business with them.

Thus, this Valentine’s day…I wonder how many of us are cashing in or contributing to its commercial value?  But again, some might  have a genuine intention to share and not only show their love…

Here is a genuine Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone.  May your lives be full of love, passion and happiness today and everyday of the year.  Don’t be sad if no one or that special someone doesn’t love you back in return…what matters is you have love for them =)

  1. [...] Maricel Ferrer-Custodio is wondering about the genuine versus commercial value of Valentine’s Day. We all know that flower shops and the Hallmarks of the world score big at this time of year, and their efforts are not entirely genuine. Maricel reminds us that being truly genuine, all the time, will help you succeed. [...]
