Venus Williams Defeats Martina Hingis at J&S Cup
In the second round of the J&S Cup, Hingis and Williams faced off for the first time since 2002. Despite leg cramps and an iffy start, Williams went on to defeat Hingis in the third round, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
“I’m very elated,” Williams said. “This is a match that seems like I should have lost toward the end, but I didn’t feel that way even though I was in a lot of pain and dire circumstances.”
“When she’s standing there you get maybe a little intimidated,” Hingis said. “I was trying to go for too much and missed it by a little bit.”
I wonder how this game would have gone if Williams was in top shape. She received medical treatment for her leg cramps during the third set.
Regardless, Williams moves on.
