Vera Zvonareva of Russia defeated Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 7-6 (5), 6-2 to take home the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament title . The wind was also very gusty for their match, getting all the way up to the 40 mph range.
Zvonareva also won the doubles title with partner Victoria Azarenka . She now joins Lindsay Davenport as the only woman to win both the singles and doubles match at Indian Wells. Davenport won in 1997 and 2000.
Quite a few errors caused Ivanovic caused her the tie breaker and also the second set. She made a total of 46 unforced errors, which was double to total of Zvonareva’s.
“After a couple of games, I knew that the conditions were very difficult and it’s not going to probably change and I have to fight for every point, have to adjust my game,” Zvonareva said. “Even though I had some mistakes and some frustrating points with the wind, I was still trying to put as many balls as I can in the court, trying to concentrate.”
The weather conditions were definitely a struggle for both players, but Zvonareva was able to handle them better, which in the end gave her that much wanted victory.
