Vista w/ ActiveSync

September 8, 2006 by Jason Bean

Thanks to Mark, I’m now downloading Vista RC1. However, I’ve also been reading that ActiveSync isn’t working with Vista and I’m using ActiveSync 4.2 with my PPC-6700 Pocket PC phone.

Is anyone using ActiveSync and running the Vista beta or RC1? Did you have problems? Is it working? What’s been your experience.

ActiveSync will be superseded by “Windows Mobile Device Center” in Windows Vista. The Downside is that WMDC is not built in RC1. It is only available for MS internal Dogfood.

    Hi,
I recently used Vista RC1, I tried to install versions of ActiveSync from 3.0 to 3.8, and 4.2.. They were all blocked except ActiveSync 3.0, which does not support CE 3.0+ devices I believe and no USB sync.. 3.0 is only for CE 2.0-2.1 based Handheld PCs and Palm Size PCs..

Use RegEdit to add a key called “WHOS” to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft, connect your device and go to Windows Update. A new 7.0MB update will be available that will allow you to sync after a manual reboot.

  4. Timothy Davis says:

The driver on WU hidden behind the WHOS registry key has been removed. The ActiveSync team is working on publishing a driver update which will be available to everybody.

I have encountered the same issue, and will try your WHOS suggestion.

I did try the Outlook 2007 & SMS combo, but more headaches and cost (from cell provoder) to get SMS messages rather then text.

I also have a PPC-6700, Windows Vista Home Premium Pre-loaded on a laptop purchased from Circuit City. I updated the Windows Mobile software for Vista. I created the registry key mentioned above. My PPC-6700 is recognized as a ” Windows Mobile Remote Adapter” but not as a Pocket PC in Windows Mobile Device Center.

I’m also interested to know how to get Activesync working on my Vista Ultimate. I can’t seem to run Microsoft’s Remote Display Control in the Windows Mobile Device Center.

I had tried that app on a XP desktop with the latest Activesync and it’s working perfectly.

Windows Mobile Device Center does not allow 2-way sync. It will not find the most recently updated contact or file and sync accordingly; it will only mindlessly move from computer A to computer B, or B to A. ActiveSync allowed 2-way sync. I’ve discussed this at length with Microsoft help. They said there’s no fix and offered to send me an XP Pro CD to replace my new Vista Home Premium OS. Has anyone come up with a better fix?

dual boot…boot to xp when you need to sync to your phone and vista when not…..

Does anyone know if Microsoft has an active sync for Vista? I know 4.2 or 4.5 does not work. If you know of a download site, please let me

    Thanks

  12. Jason says:

Sonny, it’s my understanding that the mobile synchronization tools are integrated directly within the Vista OS. There isn’t a separate application download that’s required.

  13. Sonny says:

Plug your palm/hand organizer into a USB port, and and Vista will automatically download the software.
