So, the format wars that we thought were dead when, you know, Toshiba basically gave up on HD-DVD and all that jazz? Well, apparently they are still on according to New Medium Enterprises. NME is saying that since Toshiba gave up on HD-DVD, they can now come in and take over the war and kick Blu-Ray off its throne.
The company believes that even though all the major Hollywood studio apart from Dreamworks have announced that they are going Blu it still has a chance. The company claims its VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc) will display a full high-definition format 1080p on a DVD at an affordable price.
Uh huh… And the format that can de-throne Blu-Ray? VMD (Versatile Multilayer Disc). Has anyone ever heard of, much less seen, a VMD disc or player, like, ever? According to Wikipedia, a single VMD disc holds 30GB per side, using 4-6 layers at 5GB each. Why so little? Because VMD is still using a red laser like the “old” DVD format.
We’ll see how this one turns out.
