Wade Phillips is the new Sheriff in Dallas

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Wade says as a Cowboy keep 4 things in mind, Jerry Jones, Jerry Jones, Jerry Jones, and Jerry Jones

Wade Phillips (File/The Associated Press )This time of year usually completes the coaching changes for most NFL teams.

You want to have the new coach with his staff in place long before the draft, so they can do all of the proper evaluation of players that will be needed to get the right players for their system.

But when it comes to the Cowboys, it is always a little bit different. The owner, Jerry Jones, has his own ideas on how things ought to work.

Squibster Time Out for Shameless advertising Your intrepid author did a podcast for 360thePitch the Blitz . It has excellent commentary on the Super Bowl, etc. At the 19 minutes 19 second mark, the Squibster has some breaking news on the Chicago Bears. (Hey, don’t just sit there, go now. The Squibster has spoken!)

More Shameless Advertising on the Squibster? You can find me in a 15 minute podcast over at SuicideFan.com discussing the Super Bowl and what went wrong for the Bears with the always professional Aaron Brazell. (The Squibster has spoken!)

As usual, Jerry Jones was anything but usual. He hired his offensive coordinator before hired his head coach. Now unless you have been living in a cave with the Taliban for the last several decades, you will notice that hiring the offensive coordinator first, just does not make sense. But Jerry will be Jerry.

After getting Jason Garrett to be his offensive coach, Jones hired Wade Phillips. Once again Jerry Jones bucked the trend.

So, at a time when many franchises are turning to young head coaches — Pittsburgh to the 34-year-old Tomlin, Oakland to the 31-year-old Lane Kiffin — Dallas has turned to a head coach who turns 60 in June.

But Phillips is Texas born and Texas bred, and this for him truly is the dream job. source

Football Phillips coaching family tree Wade’s dad is Bum Phillips former head coach of the Houston Oilers. Wade’s son is Wes Phillips head coach of Baylor.

Jones has his reasons. He believes that the ex-defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers can implement the 3-4 defense better than anyone else. Judging by Wade’s work with the Chargers, Jerry may be right.

NFL Football Wade Phillips factoid

He has the distinction of having been replaced by a father and a son from two head coaching positions – by Jim Mora I at the New Orleans Saints and by Jim Mora II at the Atlanta Falcons. He also has twice replaced Dan Reeves as a head coach. source

What are the implications of this hiring?

The answer to that is simple. The Cowboys had a pretty good offense, but definitely struggled on defense. It will be Wade’s job to upgrade the defense.

Some think that young DeMarcus Ware will become a Shawne Merriman type player under Wade. Providing the strong rush and qb sacks that are paramount in the 3 – 4 defense.

It will also be interesting to see how he handles Terrell Owens!

Wade would seem to have a tough way to go following Bill Parcells. You know you do not want to follow the legend, but that does not bother Wade.

Besides carrying on his family tradition, Phillips has handled the dubious task of replacing Super Bowl coaches Dan Reeves in Denver and Marv Levy in Buffalo. So the idea of following Parcells shouldn’t bother him. source

NFL Football Fan Question Would you have picked Wade over Norv Turner?

    Coach Phillips;
I’d like to make an appiontment to show you my field goal abilities. I’ll never miss a field goal under 60 yards. And I have made several farther.
